As a young female Gen Xer I think Nowra’s portrayal of contemporary women is facetious, daft and frankly, opinions and intellects like his are the reason for the continued relevance of Greer’s work.

Thanks Helen for expressing the blinding rage provoked in so many of us by The Monthly article. Germaine is arguably second only to Howard Florey on the honour roll of Australians who have changed the course of history for the better, and the contempt which her countrymen (and they are always men) show her never ceases to amaze and sadden me.

A story: Being only 3 when The Female Eunuch (TFE) was published, I never knew much about GG until about 15 years ago when, for work, I was doing some research on her. I grabbed a collection of clippings about GG, all written by Australian men over the decades since TFE, and read them assiduously; they were unanimously disparaging and contemptuous of her, and the impression I started to form of GG was of a bitter, ugly, mad, stupid, hairy, man-hating, shallow bitch.

Afterwards, I watched a series of archive interviews and footage of GG in action in the early 70s; here was the most brilliant, funny, sexy, dashing, intelligent, original, iconoclastic, gorgeous (not that it should matter), witty, shit-stirring, larrikin, spirited woman you could ever hope to see. I could not – and to this day, cannot – believe that we don’t cherish this living national treasure, who changed the lives of so many.

Went to school with the intellectual Chihuahua. Met up with him at a pretentious Exhibition Launch. Greeted him by his original birth name (not realising that Mark Doyle is now Louis Nowra.)
He denied even being Mark in a former life. The man has some real identity issues. BTW he is not simply a misogynist. He hates everyone.
